[-] Guns for the Holidays! - 3 posts
Will you give a gun, ammunition, or other firearm accessories as a present this holiday season?
I'm going to get my 10 year old son a BB gun. That was what I had when I was a young boy and it taught me the responsibilities I needed to own a real weapon
i wouldn't even give my child a water gun. because that would teach them that guns are toys... you'd have to be sick to think that a firearm would make a good gift.
if you give your child a hammer or screwdriver are they toys? they could be used to harm someone. it is up to all parents to teach gun saftey and responsibility.
[+] Firearm incident victims - 5 posts
Do you know a firearm incident victim? Or are you a victim yourself? (A firearm incident victim is anyone who has been injured or wounded by a firearm in any way.) If so, how has this impacted your views on personal firearm rights and gun control?
Lets just say I do know folks and the severe events have NOT affected my attitude against the man made, mechanical devices. They are NO smarter than the operator, some of which are really stupid! Just like cars, hammers, frozen turkeys (which have been used in assualts), etc.
When seconds count, 911 is only minutes away!!!
I was a victim of a mugging by 2 people at gun point. I don't understand how these street criminals get their guns but it should be completely outlawed. and for people who think things would be better if everyone had a gun i think you're crazy
Jim,
If guns are outlawed, do you think the guys that mugged you are going to turn them in? I would imagine not, since mugging you is also against the law and they didn't seem to mind.
If you choose not to carry, that is your business. But if guns are outlawed it will be open season on all of us who abide by the laws, as criminals will decline to turn theirs in and use those weapons against us to take what they want.
How good are you with a knife?
Jim, everyone in my family would carry if I lived in Brooklyn NY. How could you walk the street
in Brooklyn NY without a handgun. Maybe you think that if all people carried there would be a
spike in crime. I beg to differ here sir, if you were riding in the subway and someone pulled a
gun on you, everyone who saw the gun pulled on you would pull out their guns and save your sorry a**. Get some stones my friend, buy a handgun and don't be afaid to use it. Kill the next mugger.

[+] What is the right age to learn how to handle a gun? - 12 posts
What do you think is the right age to learn how to properly use and handle guns?
Please share your thoughts here at TheGunPoll message board
early as possible,
if yo start early then its safe, just like riding a bike
We were 6-7 and use to play wth a Japanese rifle with the firing pin removed - 14 when allowed to shoot 22's - 16 shot guns and 30-30's
My father started me out with a bb gun for target shooting at 4yrs old and only under his supervision. Started shooting a 22 at 9yrs ONLY under his supervision. Moved to 410 shotgun at 12. AT 14, got a 16ga and small game license.
I started my girls when they were 4yrs with safe handling of bb pistols. The rest as per my father with me
Steve, i think that you are absolutely insane to be teaching your 4 year old girls how to use guns. These are young girls and would you want them playing with guns? Just think about the possible accidents that could happen... Really, you should really think about this -- these are weapons and they are not suitable for children
Today My "girls" are 28 and 26 year olds, My oldest is a mental health profesional for your state (Cali). My youngest is middle managment for Discover Card in Phoenix. Both are well adjusted young women, that have a healthy respect and know how to use firearms.
There never was a "Mystique" or curiosity about weapons because they were common OBJECTS as to being uncommon and a curiosity in most locales today.
I learned to shoot a BB Gun around age five and at age six I fired my first handgun. I didn't really get seriously into guns until I was 23. I taught my daughter from the age of two that guns were not "playtoys" and she learned when she was 16, under mine and a Marine's supervision. I think it all depends on the maturity and interests of the child.
Depends on supervision of qualified expert. But at age 12 I was compitent because of my family and training I received.
After serving as a certified NRA Firearms Instructor for 18 years, & having received my first .22 rifle @ 4
years of age, I mst say that the maturity of the child must be taken into consideration. Some @ 4 are better able than others @ 12; & I strongly suggest the parents leave that decision to a trained firearms expert or @ least another adult friend with firearms skills who won't be under the pressure of the child to make the determination. A child involved in a shooting accident must car
cont] carry that image through the remainder of their life; so having said no & letting him/her wait another year or two will be far better served. I know of what I speak, for I was involved in an accidental shooting @ age 9 which cost me me not only my father but wrecked my family also. I have dedicated my adult life to training as many people in firearms safety as possible in an attempt to keep someone else from experiencing what I have gone through in anguish & pain over the past 53 years.
The issue is not age but maturity. Those in rural areas tend to grow up with a much higher understanding of respect and responsibility than city slickers. I know fo 6-yr olds I would trust and 36-yr olds I would NOT.
I think age 12-13 is a good age to begin. Having said that, all novice gun users should be required to go through NRA-style gun safety and shooting courses before being allowed to use a gun. Common sense to me- as it was to my father who put me in the class. I came out of it with a respect for the inherent danger, an understanding of safe practices, and desire to teach my own children the same respect and safety practices. Being around 'yayhoos'/unsafe idiots scares hell out of me.

[+] Guns are part of Obama's new credit card legislation - 5 posts
President Obama just signed into law (on May 22, 2009) a credit card bill intended to stop credit card companies from abusive practices. There is a provision in this new law which allows people entering national parks to carry concealed weapons.
What do you think of this legislation?
For my next trip to a national park i can charge some guns and ammo... sweet!
does this mean we can hunt for animals too?
Great idea - thee are a lot of whackos that lurk at parks.
The ban was put in place during the Reagan era, proof even Ron made mistakes, and has had NO impact positive or negative other than prohibiting law abiding folks the ability to efficiently defend themselves and loved ones.
Its about time this mistake was corrected!
As a traveling photographer, it is vital that I have a way to protect myself while photographing in the wild. I come across more people all the time that hang around campgrounds, parking lots, view points scanning for vehicles they can break into or rob folks not aware of their intentions. The other reason I carry is to protect myself from wild animals that I may/do come across in the wild. I've come across 2 bears and a snake that thankfully didn't attack me, but I was glad I had my gun.

Please answer honestly regardless of your views on gun rights/gun control.
i will tell you this: there is nothing hotter than one of those IDF girls holding a nice big gun!
theres some hot female USA soldiers too!
Don't think guns are sexy - I think they are art! If you own any high end, custon or even a Remington 1100 they are pretty to look at.
AS FAR AS WHO HOLDS THEM - I'm WITH SAM
Firearms are an indication of a sane, self-sufficient person. THAT is what is sexy, not some weak moron wanting Big Brother to take care of them!

[+] Guns in Economic Stimulus Program? - 7 posts
Since the start of the credit crisis and recession there have been no economic stimulus programs involving guns or firearms. Do you think such a program would be helpful, and if so, how do you think such a program should work?
A free gun would create jobs. There is a lot of steel and labor which goes into each gun -- this will create jobs. plus if everyone has a gun less people will break into homes and burglarize. this has an economic impact too.
if our president were an economist, i'm sure he would give out a gun!
think of all the spending which buying a gun would create!
- the cops who have to be on duty to protect people from crazy people shooting guns or carrying them in public
- the doctors in hospitals who have to take care of gun wounds
the real solution: stop criminals from having guns. then ordinary people don't need guns either
The government couldn't give away guns because the manufacturers are already a year behind schedule on backorders. How about a tax credit for purchase of a gun safe, or taking a defensive pistol class? That might help offset the rising costs since 11/4.
So you believe in life without parole or the death sentence for all crimes? Just asking since those are the two ways I know of to keep criminals from getting guns...
Dan, I think the death sentence for any gun crimes in which a person is shot at would prevent criminals from getting guns. A death sentence for any crime means someone could get a death sentence for something not as bad, like reckless driving or computer hacking
Typical response of a rose colored glasses wearing liberal. Wonder if this person also thinks food comes from a grocery store? (vs. being produced by workers in some non-city environment)

[+] Barack Obama & Gun Rights - 7 posts
What do you think Barack Obama's ultimate legacy will be concerning gun rights? Please share your thoughts with us.
People think that obama will be bad for guns but really it seems like there are a lot of other more important issues happening in the world (like the problems in the financial sector and stopping terrorists like hamas from attacking israel) that 2nd amendment prbly isn't his top priority right now. plus i like obama and think he'll do a good job
Obama's voting record on American character issues such as gun rights makes this self-evident. If anything, unless we watch him very carefully, the Obama administration will be worse than the Clinton administration. What will be an even bigger threat is the sort of people he might appoint to the Supreme Court, other federal courts, and as our representative in the United Nations. Robert F. misses the point. 2nd Amendment is what guarantees the rest of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Obama’s "wealth redistribution" says a lot about his take on gun rights and other American character issues. This came from my online reference. All I did was cap out the best known part of this quote. "In a higher phase of communist society ... only then can the narrow horizon of bourgeois right be fully left behind and society inscribe on its banners: FROM EACH ACCORDING TO HIS ABILITY, TO EACH ACCORDING TO HIS NEEDS." Author: Marx, Karl
I’ll let the reader reach his own conclusion.
I'm a left of center Democrat and teacher who voted for President Obama. That's because I believe in universal health care, and many other "people issues."
However, I do believe in the rights bestowed by the Second Amendment. I own and shoot guns at the range; I'm able to defend my family, if need be.
I am worried that President Obama will attempt, with some success, to reduce the existing gun rights of law-abiding citizens. Non law-abiding citizens, i.e.criminals, will be unaffected.
No way he wants to get rid of all guns! Not to mention the current laws on the books are not legal as is the Brady Bill I fought with the NCIBC and the FBI in order to get a shotgun I won from ducks unlimted. They said that my name was not supporsed to be on the list and they were requied to take it off. But that never happended but they did let be pickup the shotgun after about 6 months. I have kept all correcpondence that we have written both ways. I even quoted there own rules to no avail.
Obama is hiding his anti-gun attitude until the time is right. Presently he knows if he was honest, we'd throw his socialist tail out! The man has talked for years on the topif with nothing other than guns are bad propaganda and has surrounded himself with other antigun control folks.
lets pray all those other problems keep this guy so busy he has not chance to address this so-called problem (which of course he will first create so he can take advantage of his mess0

Someone already pointed out that the Constitution does not grant, but instead, let me clarify, affirms existing rights predating the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Magna Carta, and are endowed to us by our Creator, and inherent in the definition of a free man or woman.
One problem with survey is question about "assault rifle." Do you mean "MilSpec" assault rifles, or also semiauto-only clones? Thank Sen. Feinstein and her political term "assault weapon" for clouding this i
i dont care if it's an assault rifle or a semi-automatic clone, but i dont want to own a gun at all. i think that if nobody had a gun (except police and the army) then everyone would be safer.
it seems silly that since since some people have guns, everyone else needs to but a gun in self defense. if nobody had a gun then nobody would need to buy a gun in self-defense. seems very simple to me
Michael from New York misses the point entirely. God created man. Sam Colt made him equal. We have people and countries with no regard for rights of others. Our Armed forces handle such countries. Armed citizens handle this on a personal level. The police? They pick up the pieces AFTER you've been robbed, beaten, raped, or murdered. Bill Jordan said it best regarding such people and countries. Both are criminal. "SUPERIOR FORCE IS THE ONLY LANGUAGE CRIMINALS FULLY UNDERSTAND!"
andy,
i think that michael's point is this: the criminals wont have guns. so you wouldn/t need to worry about them having guns. this means you wouldn't need to own a gun.
also, i think the police will do a pretty good job at protecting me. this is because i respect my local law enforcement officials as believe most good americans do.
My wife and I own guns for defensive purposes and recreational target shooting. I think that for most, guns and skill with them are a well-practiced martial art, a tool of personal security, a symbol and tangible reminder of political and personal freedom, a Zen-like discipline, a fun hobby, and a locus of camaraderie that crosses political, social, and ethnic lines.

Do you think that 200 pound unarmed criminal is a fair match for most women?
How about the two unarmed criminals that have set about to steal everything you own after they beat you to death?
A criminal does not have to be armed with any weapon to be dangerous. I see no reason why the playing field should be level, if I have to fight someone intent on doing me or my loved ones harm. I value human life, but I do not value a criminal's life above my own or those that fall victim t
James SD and Michael NY operate under invalid logical premise "lawbreakers obey the law." Criminals BY DEFINITION break laws, including gun laws! Also, criminals do crimes when police are not watching. That makes YOU your own first line of defense.

Oops. I should have done a better job of counting characters. The last line should have read, "Life is a gift of God. To fail to defend this gift by whatever means necessary can be seen as an insult to our Creator."
I was surprised by the number of people who believe that more gunes=more criminal violence. It has now been documented, repeatedly, that increased gun control takes guns away from law -abiding citizens, not criminals, and gun-crime rates rise sharply. Drop the restrictions of gun ownership and violent crime rates drop sharply, not just gun crimes but all violent crimes.
Some people say "Guns cause violent crime." I rarely hear anyone ask "How many crimes were stopped due to guns?"
you can tell a lot about a mans or womens morale compass by the way they reference the right of the second amendment. i dont need a document or another human being to explain to me that i have the right to defend my gift of life. and for someone to say like these two ignorant individuals as well as any other individuals that only the police and military should have guns . would probably like to have met hitler or stalin or many other DICKtators .
I apoligize but i have to continue. people such as mike from NY . if you are so willing to give up your freedoms for temperary security, then you dont deserve liberty or security. when people fear government thats tyranny, when government fears the people thats liberty. plain and simple. instead of taking guns how about educating people instead. rather than teaching kids how to use a damn condom in elementry school.
Of course if therer were no guns, then the 250lb guy/criminal wouldn't have to worry about robbing or raping that 100lb lady right? Or the wheelchair bound guy? Without guns, "might makes right." How much do you weigh and do you think you could adequately defend yourself from said 250lb gang banger and a few of his friends just because they didn't have a gun, and instead were armed with a length of pipe or a chain?
The police are rarely able to interceed and prevent a violent crime. They are however very good at collecting evidence after the crime is over.
And if no one had guns, how would you feel about bats, pipes, knives and other non-firearms that can be used as a weapon. I suppose you're big enough and bad enough to not have to worry that some thug with a pipe might want to rob you and not leave a witness, right?
As a retired law enforcement officer, I have to advise you not to rely upon the police for your personal protection. Police forces, in general, do a good job, but criminals rarely cooperate. The criminal will wait until there are no police around to commit his crime. So, by the time you or someone else reports the crime and the police arrive on the scene a minimum of 5 minutes have elapsed, if you are lucky. Usually it is considerably longer. If you are unarmed, good luck.
Only the most supremely-naive Kumbaya singer would even dream that guns can be magically eliminated from our society. There are upward of 200 million guns in the US. Criminals don't need guns to commit crimes, but crimes are FAR easier to commit if responsible citizens are denied the right to own them. In any case, guns aren't the problem. Criminals are. A better solution to the problem of violent crime? Fry violent criminals to a nice golden brown in large vats of 500 degree peanut oil.
I own and use guns because they are fun.
Nothing much but hot air for any other reason to own firearms.
I grew up with firearms in the home on the farm and was taught responsible ownership. I used to hunt, but mostly like to shoot targets for the fun. It teaches a wide variety of skills, and improves concentration. I think they are an important piece of our constitution as well to prevent a dictatorship, or to keep our country from being invaded. I pray neither of those things ever occur, but we saw it happen in other countries.
Michael, it seems very simple indeed. Then when you actually look at the places and times in history with the most rigorous gun control, you finally figure out that defending against burglars, rapists and murderers isn't half the problem. Look at all the times and places historically where only government institutions are legally armed and gun control is rigidly enforced so far. A very high percentage of those become or are dictatorial states of some type and carried out some form of atrocity

Guns do not kill - people kill.
Handed down or purchased we use the for food, which we celebrate, and recreation.
An updated count of firearms in the U.S. per ATF, dated 09/09/09 is approx. 355 million or about 1.4 for every citizen in the U.S. I have served in both military as firearms Instructor & LEO as well as being an NRA certified Instr. for 18 years during which time I owned & operated a gun shop; & have actually refused to sell firearms to some individuals who wanted a gun NOT to use if needed for protection but to scare someone by simply showing it to them. In responce to crushthesheeple; Sir, I suspect we look at sheeple from different prospectives. I started using the term SHEEPLE in 1985 in reference to Americans who believe that by depending on the local LEO's for protection & living basicly with the herd mentality they would be safe from harm. They fail to take into account the WOLVES[felons]who feed on them because they fear firearms & refuse to
even think about owning one for protection. Those of us who know better[sheep dogs]have CCW
cont]Permits & carry daily, thus serving to keep the Wolves from feeding quit as regularly as they have in the past. As the # of CCW permits grow around the country the # of crimes drop in those states & cities where the Sheep Dogs are not afraid to stand up & do what is sometimes necessary to protect other law-abiding Americans! Regardless of their attitudes or speeches in which they baaaaaad mouth those who save their very lives without their even knowing about our doing so; we will keep on!

One of the questions on this poll is misleading and incorrect...the 2nd Amendments DOES NOT give us the right to bear arms. If you read the preamble and what our Founding Fathers had to say, it is CLEAR that we were given ALL the rights in the Bill of Rights by GOD! The Bill of Rights simply AFFIRMS that the Federal Government will NOT abridge (take away) these rights. The King of England abridged these rights--FF wanted to insure the NEW Fed Govt would NEVER do the same!
Doug 144,
The 2nd amendment of the constitution is "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. " God is not mentioned in the constitution and owning weapons are certainly not mentioned as a god given right. I think that it's actually a pretty fair question
"Amendment II
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. "
The country was barely founded, each state was responsible for and maintained and no provisions for a standing military were required. The newly formed GVT (local up to Fed) immediately began abusing their power and caused "Shay's Rebellion". It was then that the reason for a Second Amendment was clear and has ket the GVT
A quibble---in the question about guns the 2ndA protects, there is no category for the most popular rifles in America, namely civilian target rifles and defensive carbines (aka "assault weapons").
4 out of 5 US gun owners are nonhunters, and most rifles in US homes are not hunting rifles. So we either have to stick nonhunting rifles under "hunting rifles," or stick them under "assault rifles", which they're not (assault rifles are by definition selective-fire, and heavily restricted).
Does someone have to give you permission to protect and or defend your life or the lives of your loved ones?
